Let there be light. There will be in this sunny style designed to capture amazing views as well as every ray of sunlight throughout the day. Architectural accents of the past give this modern barn-inspired design a historical look and importance. Custom details enhance both the exterior and interior, giving this home real curb appeal. Decorative brackets and large windows surround the main entrance, welcoming friends and family to the handsome board and batten exterior, which also features a solid stone foundation, varying symmetrical roof lines with interesting pitches, trusses, and a charming cupola over the garage. Once inside, an open floor plan provides both elegance and ease. A central foyer leads into the 2,700-square-foot main floor and directly into a roomy 18 by 19-foot living room with a natural fireplace and soaring ceiling heights open to the second floor where abundant large windows bring the outdoors in. Beyond is an approximately 200 square foot screened porch that looks out over the verdant backyard. To the left is the dining room and open-plan family-style kitchen, which, at 16 by 14-feet, has space to accommodate both everyday family and special occasion gatherings. Abundant counter space, a central island and nearby pantry make it as convenient as it is attractive. Also on this side of the floor plan is the first-floor laundry and a roomy mudroom sure to help you keep your family organized. The plan’s right side includes more private spaces, including a large 12 by 17-foot master bedroom suite with natural fireplace, master bath, sitting area and walk-in closet, and private study/office with a large file room. The 1,100-square foot second level includes two spacious family bedrooms and a cozy 10 by 18-foot loft/sitting area. When she’s not on location for photo shoots or soaking in inspiration on her many travels, creative consultant, Michelle Adams, masterfully tackles her projects in the comfort of her quaint home in Michigan. Working with California Closets design consultant, Janice Fischer, Michelle set out to transform an underutilized room into a fresh and functional office that would keep her organized and motivated. Considering the space’s visible sight-line from most of the first floor, Michelle wanted a sleek system that would allow optimal storage, plenty of work space and an unobstructed view to outside. Janice first addressed the room’s initial challenges, which included large windows spanning two of the three walls that were also low to floor where the system would be installed. Working closely with Michelle on an inventory of everything for the office, Janice realized that there were also items Michelle needed to store that were unique in size, such as portfolios. After their consultation, however, Janice proposed three, custom options to best suit the space and Michelle’s needs. To achieve a timeless, contemporary look, Janice used slab faces on the doors and drawers, no hardware and floated the portion of the system with the biggest sight-line that went under the window. Each option also included file drawers and covered shelving space for items Michelle did not want to have on constant display. The completed system design features a chic, low profile and maximizes the room’s space for clean, open look. Simple and uncluttered, the system gives Michelle a place for not only her files, but also her oversized portfolios, supplies and fabric swatches, which are now right at her fingertips.

Inspired by the Craftsman aesthetic and classic All-American bungalow design, the exterior features interesting roof lines with overhangs, stone and shingle accents and abundant windows designed both to let in maximum natural sunlight as well as take full advantage of the lakefront views. The covered front porch leads into a welcoming foyer and the first level’s 1,150-square foot floor plan, which is divided into both family and private areas for maximum convenience. Private spaces include a flexible first-floor bedroom or office on the left; family spaces include a living room with fireplace, an open plan kitchen with an unusual oval island and dining area on the right as well as a nearby handy mud room. At night, relax on the 150-square-foot screened porch or patio. Head upstairs and you’ll find an additional 1,025 square feet of living space, with two bedrooms, both with unusual sloped ceilings, walk-in closets and private baths. A small computer desk has been decluttered and much needed storage added with the desk top organizer. A small lamp, a mug for pens, pencils and highlighers adds to the useful workspace. A flower arrangement in a gold vase adds to the charm. (What would Magnolia Organizing be without a flower here and there?)
