K. Dakin Design won the 2018 CARE award from the Custom Builder and Remodeler Council of Denver for the reimagination of the landscape around this classic organic-modernist home designed by Charles Haertling. The landscape design is inspired by the original home and it’s materials, especially the distinct, clean lines of the architecture and the natural, stone veneer found on the house and landscape walls. The outlines of garden beds, a small patio and a water feature reiterate the home’s straight walls juxtaposed against rough, irregular stone facades and details. This sensitivity to the architecture is clearly seen in the triangular shapes balanced with curved forms. The clients, a couple with busy lives, wanted a simple landscape with lawn for their dogs to fetch balls. The amenities they desired were a spa, vegetable beds, fire pit, and a water feature. They wanted to soften the tall, site walls with plant material. All the material, such as the discarded, stone veneer and left-over, flagstone paving was recycled into new edging around garden areas, new flagstone paths, and a water feature. The front entry walk was inspired by a walkway at Gunnar Asplund’s cemetary in Sweden. All plant material, aside from the turf, was low water, native or climate appropriate.

Simple but elegant design using EP Henry Double Sided Cast Stone wall for the fire fit and sitting wall. Pavers include EP Henry Bristol Stone with Color Tech. Walkway is outlined by In-Lite HYVE 22 recessed paver lighting illuminating a welcoming path during night hours.

A previously dated shower covered with brown tile was transformed into an open and bright shower with classic white subway tile. The subway tile with imperfect edges put a modern spin on the classic subway tile. Marble pencil outlines a section of subway tile laid in a herringbone pattern to create a stunning feature wall. The custom shower bench and floor are elevated by a ceramic tile with marble coloration.

Cabinets: The kitchen perimeter features WWWoods Shiloh cabinetry in maple wood, Aspen door style, with a Poplar painted finish. The island also from WWWoods Shiloh, in an Aspen door style, Alder wood, with an Umber stain. Countertop: The 3cm countertops on the perimeter and island are Cambria quartz in Ella. Backsplash: The 4 x16 brick-lay backsplash is a H-Line Pumice glossy from Arizona tile. Above the range a pictured frame is outlined in ¾ x 12 Arizona Tile Calcutta Gold polished dome liner, and inside the frame we have a 2” hex mesh of the same material. Fixtures and Fittings: From Blanco, we have a 30” Ikon apron front single bowl sink in White, and a Grace II faucet with a pull-down spray in Polished Chrome. The cabinet hardware is a 5” Emerald pull, and a 1-1/8 Emerald knob from Top Knobs in Polished Chrome.

By raising the ceiling in this newly remodeled kitchen, the space simply opened up. The large island is able to accommodate conversational seating to be near the cook, but does not interrupt the traffic path to the cooktop, sink, and refrigerator. White painted periphery cabinets with a rich countertop creates a larger outline, while the dark stained island cabinets and lighter countertop grounds the center of the space. Beautiful veined tile adds depth and interest to the solid surfaces.

This home was built in 1983 and looked every bit its age. As is so often the case, the owners purchased it because it was a great deal, in a great school district and had "good bones." But the accolades ended at the curb. The home was a hotbed of bad choices and not to their liking. So armed with YouTube video and a Home Depot card they set out to change it. After years of DIYing it and still not happy, the owners decided it was time to call Alair and get the expertise of professional help if they were ever going to have the home of their dreams.

This basketball court was installed in Syosset Long Island NY by Gappsi. Starting with the location to best fit the 30 x 60 court and the swimming pool area within the already landscaped yard. The construction of the base for the court consists of 6 inches of recycled concrete base and 2 inches of compacted asphalt. It was then sealed, with a 6 x 9 masonry border around the edges. A full size adjustable hoop was also installed. Mateflex tiles modular outdoor flooring tiles were installed over the asphalt, stretched, and then secured all around the perimeter to create an expandable and contracting court floor. A combination of blue and gray colors are selected for the tiles with white striping to outline the Basketball and the pickle ball court., a complete key, a 3-point line, and a capital "S" is printed in the center of the court that stands for the owner's last name. Volleyball/pickle ball lines are also marked on the tile and the adjustable net was installed in the middle of the court. The court was installed in a section of the backyard that was not utilized by the homeowner for any other use. The basketball court fit perfectly and turned this area into a very active sports area for the whole family to enjoy. The Mateflex tiles are the best in the industry. They are manufactured in 12 x 12 inch tiles that are then divided into 16 individual 3 x 3 sections attached to each other with an expansion joint system allowing the court to flex and prevent the tiles from warping in hot and cold weather situation.
