Inspiration for a timeless home office remodel in Charlotte

Design: This Boulder family loved their home in Frasier Meadows for its generous yard and welcoming spirit. Set on nearly a third of an acre, it was a place for gardening, neighborhood connection, and board game nights with kids and friends. But while the property had heart, the interior felt dark in winter, disconnected from the backyard, and no longer aligned with how they lived. The kitchen was the biggest challenge. It lacked functionality, prep space, and the thoughtful storage needed for a family that hosts often. Through this Boulder home remodel, we made a bold move, relocating the kitchen to the opposite side of the house. This allowed us to create a hybrid enclosed kitchen with glass dividers: light-filled, but tucked away enough to reduce noise and conceal clutter. Designed in a Japandi-meets-cottage aesthetic, the kitchen balances warmth and minimalism with layered woods and soft greens. Appliance garages, ceiling-height cabinetry, hidden outlets, spice storage, pull-out trash bins, and a generous island ensure everything has its place. The dining and living spaces were reoriented to strengthen flow to the backyard, while a new genkan-inspired entry and custom mudroom cabinetry support their love of gardening. Build: As a design build Boulder team, collaboration guided every step. The homeowners knew exactly how they wanted to use their space; they simply needed the right structural and layout changes to bring it to life. Expanding the primary bedroom over the garage was transformative. The added square footage made room for built-in wardrobes, relocated laundry, and a Japanese-inspired ensuite featuring a wet room with a soaking tub. This expansion solved their need for space while creating a true retreat within the home. By moving the kitchen and enhancing indoor-outdoor flow, we addressed both function and feeling. The home now feels brighter, more connected to the yard, and better equipped for hosting, whether it’s casual weeknight dinners or full-house game nights. This thoughtful Boulder home remodel reflects a home that works beautifully as it gathers people together.

Sunroom - sunroom idea in Edinburgh

The homeowners wanted an updated aesthetic for their deck, and they wanted a portion of it to be under cover. They also wanted a heating option so that it could be used year-round regardless of the weather. Since the deck is immediately outside of their kitchen nook, it was also important to them that the new covering allow light to continue to come into the house. In addition, they wanted the option to access the backyard from the deck. Beyond that, there was a desire to connect the front and back yards underneath the deck, and to provide a privacy structure for their garbage and recycling cans while maintaining the secluded feel their wooded lot provides. The new deck design added six feet to the overall size, which allowed us to provide a covered area that included heaters and lighting for the darker, colder months without reducing the overall usable space. The couple selected an aluminum railing with stainless steel cables to complement the IPE decking. The back stairs featured ironwood rails and IPE boards on the horizontal sections to complement the concrete stairs and offer an industrial vibe. The railings are lit with LED strip lighting throughout, and disc lights were installed on either side of the concrete stairs to ensure safety at night.

Set in Montana's tranquil Shields River Valley, the Shilo Ranch Compound is a collection of structures that were specifically built on a relatively smaller scale, to maximize efficiency. The main house has two bedrooms, a living area, dining and kitchen, bath and adjacent greenhouse, while two guest homes within the compound can sleep a total of 12 friends and family. There's also a common gathering hall, for dinners, games, and time together. The overall feel here is of sophisticated simplicity, with plaster walls, concrete and wood floors, and weathered boards for exteriors. The placement of each building was considered closely when envisioning how people would move through the property, based on anticipated needs and interests. Sustainability and consumption was also taken into consideration, as evidenced by the photovoltaic panels on roof of the garage, and the capability to shut down any of the compound's buildings when not in use.

For a Francophile client who needed an update in her Living Room, only balloon shades would do. This Living room design was a nominee Finalist design in the Soft Shades category at the 2024 Grace Awards, of the International Window Coverings Expo. The project itself was more than just the Balloon shades, including a layered window treatment design, new paint color, and even a new footstool for the room, as well as tweaking furniture placement. In this photo, the tailored balloon shade at the window is able to be lowered completely for privacy at night, if desired. The Hunter Douglas Silhouette in Originale fabric, is the original semi-sheer version of Silhouette, providing daytime privacy and from anyone coming up the sidewalk to the front door, which passes by this window. Silhouettes also reduce glare, softening the light, and filtering ultraviolet rays which damage fabrics and wood. The green paint color was selected to complement the fabric of the shades. A Seattle couple needed to take advantage of our amazing summer weather and asked for a way to watch movies outside. We were up to the challenge, designing a custom concrete bench that by day serves as built-in seating and transforms at night into a perfect spot to catch a flick on the fly!
