Trying to find a quiet corner in one's house for an office can be tough, but it also can be an adventure! Reworking spaces in our homes so that they work better for our families as they grow and change is something we all need to do from time to time-- and it can give your house a new lease on life. One room that took on a new identity in this old farmhouse was the third floor attic space--a room that is much like a treehouse with its small footprint, high perch, lofty views of the landscape, and sloping ceiling. The space has been many things over the past two decades- a bedroom, a guest room, a hang-out for kids... but NOW it is the 'world headquarters' for my client's business. :) Adding all the funky touches that make it a cozy personal space made all the difference...like lots of live green plants, vintage original artwork, architectural salvage window sashes, a repurposed and repainted dresser from the 1940's, and, of course, my client's favorite photos.

OVERVIEW Set into a mature Boston area neighborhood, this sophisticated 2900SF home offers efficient use of space, expression through form, and myriad of green features. MULTI-GENERATIONAL LIVING Designed to accommodate three family generations, paired living spaces on the first and second levels are architecturally expressed on the facade by window systems that wrap the front corners of the house. Included are two kitchens, two living areas, an office for two, and two master suites. CURB APPEAL The home includes both modern form and materials, using durable cedar and through-colored fiber cement siding, permeable parking with an electric charging station, and an acrylic overhang to shelter foot traffic from rain. FEATURE STAIR An open stair with resin treads and glass rails winds from the basement to the third floor, channeling natural light through all the home’s levels. LEVEL ONE The first floor kitchen opens to the living and dining space, offering a grand piano and wall of south facing glass. A master suite and private ‘home office for two’ complete the level. LEVEL TWO The second floor includes another open concept living, dining, and kitchen space, with kitchen sink views over the green roof. A full bath, bedroom and reading nook are perfect for the children. LEVEL THREE The third floor provides the second master suite, with separate sink and wardrobe area, plus a private roofdeck. ENERGY The super insulated home features air-tight construction, continuous exterior insulation, and triple-glazed windows. The walls and basement feature foam-free cavity & exterior insulation. On the rooftop, a solar electric system helps offset energy consumption. WATER Cisterns capture stormwater and connect to a drip irrigation system. The pool’s full-length elevated feature wall has multiple roles. First, it serves as a raised platform for the two fire bowels and three sheer descent waterfalls. Second, it provides a place where people can sit and dangle their feet in the water. Third, it provides a raised platform for diving, in the portion above the deep end.

This landscape is based on a painting by pioneering abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky. The Art Garden method of Landscape Design is a process where the outdoor environment's design is based on the the work of a specific artist or work of art, or incorporates multiple art forms into the space, including sculpture, music, dance, performance art and experiential elements. The swirling shape of the front stones give the composition a sense of movement, while the variegated Sedum offer a structural contrast to the red wall, and can tolerate the hot dry microclimate of stone mulch and the concrete wall. Behind the wall is a massing of Hay Scented Fern, a lush bright green contrast to the red wall. The red arching wall offers a high contrast backdrop to the sculptural fire pit, which is a cast iron sugar kettle from South Carolina. It’s rim sits on top of two of the boulders, while fitting into a notch of the third boulder, creating an asymmetrical, funky balance, typical of Kandinsky’s work.

This home is in Noe Valley, a highly desirable and growing neighborhood of San Francisco. As young highly-educated families move into the area, we are remodeling and adding on to the aging homes found there. This project remodeled the entire existing two story house and added a third level, capturing the incredible views toward downtown. The design features integral color stucco, zinc roofing, an International Orange staircase, eco-teak cabinets and concrete counters. A flowing sequence of spaces were choreographed from the entry through to the family room.

Builder: Falcon Custom Homes Interior Designer: Mary Burns - Gallery Photographer: Mike Buck A perfectly proportioned story and a half cottage, the Farfield is full of traditional details and charm. The front is composed of matching board and batten gables flanking a covered porch featuring square columns with pegged capitols. A tour of the rear façade reveals an asymmetrical elevation with a tall living room gable anchoring the right and a low retractable-screened porch to the left. Inside, the front foyer opens up to a wide staircase clad in horizontal boards for a more modern feel. To the left, and through a short hall, is a study with private access to the main levels public bathroom. Further back a corridor, framed on one side by the living rooms stone fireplace, connects the master suite to the rest of the house. Entrance to the living room can be gained through a pair of openings flanking the stone fireplace, or via the open concept kitchen/dining room. Neutral grey cabinets featuring a modern take on a recessed panel look, line the perimeter of the kitchen, framing the elongated kitchen island. Twelve leather wrapped chairs provide enough seating for a large family, or gathering of friends. Anchoring the rear of the main level is the screened in porch framed by square columns that match the style of those found at the front porch. Upstairs, there are a total of four separate sleeping chambers. The two bedrooms above the master suite share a bathroom, while the third bedroom to the rear features its own en suite. The fourth is a large bunkroom above the homes two-stall garage large enough to host an abundance of guests.

The third part of the project is about the new addition to the family who has added a new sense of fun and liveliness. They adopted a puppy and decided to install what we are calling the doggy tunnel. Working closely with our carpenter we designed and built the doggy tunnel starting in the entry closet, with a small box to fit the dog, through the wall to another box on the outside of the condo with doggy doors on each end and in the middle. Training has commenced and I heard the puppy is now using it and loving it. This makes it easier for both the homeowner and the dog.

Set in a steeply sloped hillside, the project¬ included extensive rear yard improvements, terraced gardens and a steel bridge that connects the living spaces to the outdoors. A new roof deck takes advantage of the dramatic downtown views. Interior highlights include a custom stair “ribbon” of steel and kumaroo wood, a built-in wine cellar, and dumbwaiter on two levels.

We were commissioned by the owners of this property, to design a new mixed-use building that would fit into the character of the historic village of Stowe, while replacing an existing structure that was in a poor state of repair. Located on the corner of Depot and Pond Streets, the new building is based on the simple, classic lines and proportions of mid-1800’s Greek Revival Period architecture. It features a main level commercial space facing Depot Street, a main and upper level 2-bedroom residence, and two upper and third level single bedroom residences.
