This hand-cut flagstone patio with seatwall and inset lighting complements its beautiful woodland surroundings just outside Athens GA. The double function of the seatwall gives a clean, uncluttered look, as the space is kept free of furniture. The theater was finished in chocolate and medium brown tones including the ceiling. Carlet is plush and soft for floor-watching viewers. Lighting is decorative, low-level on dimmer switches.

Rooms like this are difficult to light, but notice the fireplace where the objects on the mantle stand out and the stone has such great texture. The fixture that is creating the effect is on viewers side of the large beam about 20 feet from the fireplace. Beam control of the bulb is critical to getting the right amount of light where you need it.

The wall where the existing range was located is utilized by adding more storage and countertop. Corner closet door was removed to create more counter and cabinet space. Fluorescent under cabinet lights were added for task lighting. White frameless cabinets and Quartz countertops brightened the space and enlarged the room visually. Using white paint helped to direct the viewer’s eye to the focal point; the flaming red Aga Range. The existing hardwood floor was retained and refinished to help meet the budget.

This project exemplifies the power and beauty found in combining modern sculpture and architecture with well-considered watershape design.
