Our La Cañada studio designed this lovely home, keeping with the fun, cheerful personalities of the homeowner. The entry runner from Annie Selke is the perfect introduction to the house and its playful palette, adding a welcoming appeal. In the dining room, a beautiful, iconic Schumacher wallpaper was one of our happy finishes whose vines and garden colors begged for more vibrant colors to complement it. So we added bold green color to the trims, doors, and windows, enhancing the playful appeal. In the family room, we used a soft palette with pale blue, soft grays, and warm corals, reminiscent of pastel house palettes and crisp white trim that reflects the turquoise waters and white sandy beaches of Bermuda! The formal living room looks elegant and sophisticated, with beautiful furniture in soft blue and pastel green. The curtains nicely complement the space, and the gorgeous wooden center table anchors the space beautifully. In the kitchen, we added a custom-built, happy blue island that sits beneath the house’s namesake fabric, Hydrangea Heaven. ---Project designed by Courtney Thomas Design in La Cañada. The open living area of this industrial loft conversion, anchored by a bold yellow sectional beneath 11-foot ceilings, exposed concrete floors, and original conduit overhead. Beyond it, the all-black kitchen with its white waterfall island and black metal accents grounds the space. Curated illustrative art adds a kaleidoscope of colour to the raw industrial shell.

This media room installation consists of a solid Poplar frame for a wall mounted flat screen television, 2 solid Poplar cube shelves that have built-in down lights and 3/8" thick cantilevered glass shelves, a solid Poplar single high wall mounted 4-drawer cabinet with LED lighting built into the back-splash, and lighting beneath the cabinet to highlight the solid Rosewood tile wall treatment. The Poplar is finished with a custom chocolate brown paint, and the Rosewood tiles have a clear coat of Satin Polyurethane. All lighting is dimmer operated. The overall dimension of the project is about 10' x 6'.

We love seeing people become engaged in design and educated on the wide range of possibilities. But we hope you’ll proceed with caution. It’s not that style errors are a matter of life and death. It’s just that it’s easy to choose designs that aren’t necessarily reflective of your own personality and character. And since you’re typically stuck with your interior design decisions for years, styles that don’t quite fit can tend to grate on you. Interiors that give one person comfort may unleash chaos in someone else. This goes beyond favorite colors or hot trends, right to the heart of interior design, where you find questions of composition, balance, repetition, space and more. The goal is to find that unique combination of design elements that gives you comfort, support and balance. In one home, that perfect balance was struck through the use of symmetry. A pair of comfortable swivel chairs sit beneath matching indigo patterned paintings. Matching bookcases below the paintings contain similar, but not identical, arrangements of books, vases and bowls. Woods and bronzes help warm up the simple white bookcase shelving. Two matching poufs in front of the fireplace provide additional seating. The sofa is accented with a pair of pillows with a blue pattern that echoes the artwork. The effect of the symmetry is to achieve order and simplicity, which I promote at every opportunity. After all, your home interiors should be the setting or the backdrop of your life—not center stage. Antique bronze and blue are complementary colors. Together, they offer a rich palette of richness and depth, which brings out the beauty of wood and stone. In the home office, a unique, whitewash-stained wooden desk rests on metal, Sawhorse-inspired legs for a warm, rustic look. The black leather chair features a contemporary silhouette with an antique brass frame. An adjustable desk lamp has bronze accents. The bookcase combines a sleek, black metal frame with concrete shelves, for another unusual pairing. It’s kept uncluttered for an orderly, peaceful look. Items on the shelves include a bronze-accented lamp and a pair of high gloss-finished wooden bookends. The elegant artwork behind the desk is a simple midnight-blue and bronze with mottled white. Deep blues are again picked up in the rug, which adds a stately vibe with a modern pattern and satisfying texture. Within the framework of symmetry, the living room repeats the blue-and-bronze color scheme. A large midcentury brass clock above the fireplace keeps the natural stone visible, rather than hidden behind a painting or television, while its straight lines and color create a beautiful contrast. The sofa is a soft, neutral blue. The pattern on the round brass side table features echoes the darker blue-patterned rug, as well as the rug in the office, tying the rooms together. Indigo blue books adjacent to bronze vases on the shelves repeat the color scheme. The soapstone-topped coffee table echoes the shape of the fireplace. A pair of tall, matching floor lamps with long wooden bases, brass pulls and simple linen shades combine both the colors and symmetry found throughout the home.

This two toned kitchen that opening to the great room is the heart of the home. By relocating the entry door to the pantry closet, the flow of the kitchen improved greatly. A new frosted panel pantry door was installed. A two tone combination of white painted and espresso stain was combined to lighten the formerly dark space. New porcelain tile flooring was installed throughout. Natural stone backsplash tiles in wispy neutrals glows beneath the under cabinet lighting.

At about 8 to 10 feet long, the island features a high-end engineered quartz countertop, with subtle veining in shades of gray and white. The island is finished with painted cabinetry in soft olive-green color, balancing the space with a touch of elegance. 2. Icelandic Picket Ceramic Tile Backsplash Above the Gas Range: Above the gas range, the Icelandic Picket ceramic tile backsplash makes a bold statement, drawing attention with its unique design and color palette. These elongated, picket-shaped tiles come in a range of soft, natural tones – think cool whites, subtle greens, and light grays – that evoke the serene beauty of Iceland’s landscapes. The tiles are installed in a chic, geometric pattern, creating a contemporary feel that contrasts beautifully with the traditional elements of the kitchen. Their glossy finish adds a sense of brightness, reflecting natural light from the large windows. This expanded backyard deck was constructed as part of a full house renovation in the Kerrisdale neighbourhood of Vancouver. The deck extension created a larger outdoor living area connected directly to the home’s interior spaces, providing a practical setting for family gatherings and outdoor dining. A durable vinyl deck surface was installed to improve weather resistance and long-term maintenance performance. New aluminum guardrails with a wood top rail were added to enhance safety while maintaining a clean, contemporary appearance that complements the surrounding garden landscape. During construction, infrastructure was also prepared for a future outdoor kitchen installation. Water supply, drainage, and gas lines were strategically roughed-in beneath the deck to allow easy integration of cooking and entertainment features in the future.
