This custom Porch is built using TimberTech Ashwood decking and white vinyl railings. The space also features a custom porch utilizing a Sun Space window system. This allows all the windows to collapse into a small panel, turning the room into a screened porch. The space showcases barn wood in multiple places along with an impressive wood burning fireplace. The overarching goal for these clients was a zero maintenance exterior. In order to truly accomplish that, the entire outside shell of the house had to be redone. All of the original aluminum siding was replaced with top-of-the-line Azek Trim (a composite) and repainted Hardie Plank Siding (a cement-based material designed to look exactly like wood siding). There was a lot of rotting wood that was behind the old siding making the covered porch area into a serious hazard, as it was on the verge of collapsing. The rotting areas were all fixed, including rotting areas on the roof. The old shingles were removed, rotting areas were fixed and the entire house was re-shingled. Numerous windows were replaced throughout the house including the garage and stable windows. The rear nook windows were replaced with ones that better addressed the space and disability while also addressing the massive rot present due to improper installation in the original construction.

Bedroom - transitional bedroom idea in Portland Maine

The goal of this renovation was to replace four external staircases of a 50 year old apartment building next to Cheltenham Beach in Devonport, Auckland. We went to have a look at the stairs and soon realised they were on the verge of collapsing due to advanced corrosion in both the steel stringers and the concrete tread reinforcements. As the stairs were the only access for some of the apartments, we decided to do the work in stages to lessen the impact for the residents. Initially, we removed the balustrade and erected temporary barriers, as well as provided temporary treads to replace the most dangerous and broken ones. We were asked to make the new stairs as close to the original ones as possible. In order to achieve this, we chose to renovate the existing balustrade, and took samples of the broken treads to a concrete paving specialist for the closest match. The frame of the stairs, all the concrete treads, and the landings needed to be replaced entirely, so we fabricated four new stairs in more robust material. We also made sure there were no areas for water to pool, which future proofed them for the next 50 years. Finally, when it came to the installation, we removed the old stairs and installed each new staircase with the refurbished balustrade in a single day to ensure the residents could access their homes when they got home from work.

In May and June 2016 we had the privilege to restore a 100 year old barn that was collapsing. It was 13″ out of level from one end to the next, so we had to jack up the posts, pour a concrete foundation & reinstall new posts. Luckily for us (and the barn owners) we were able to salvage a lot of the old lumber for patching the siding. We had to also use new lumber that we used chemicals on to age them so that it would match the old barn wood. We put a new shake roof on it and a new galvanized metal roof. It’s been a pretty fun project knowing that we are saving a piece of history.
