Architect Bruce Wentworth, AIA established Wentworth, Inc. in 2004. His design/build residential remodeling company, Wentworth, is a unique collaboration of architects, designers and craftsman who integrate architecture, interiors and construction. The Wentworth process enables our in-house design team to find the best design solutions for our clients, and our in-house construction crew to build to the highest level of craftsmanship. As an architect-led organization - design and craftsmanship - are held to a higher priority seldom found in other residential design/build firms. Mr. Wentworth commenced his architectural practice in 1986, working from his home, with a focus on residential remodeling in the Capitol Hill historic district of Washington, DC. His pursuit of architectural work led him to become the architect of choice for many years providing design services to remodel and expand hundreds of the local historic rowhouses. By the early 1990s Mr. Wentworth joined with a local contractor/business partner and together they implemented the architect-led design/build concept. After more than a decade of partnership Mr. Wentworth set off on his own to found Wentworth, Inc. Mr. Wentworth is a licensed architect and a licensed home improvement contractor in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. He holds a Class A license in Virginia. Prior to starting his first company in 1986 he worked in the field of high-end commercial office interiors where he gathered knowledge of space planning, materials, and finishes which translated well with his residential remodeling work. Wentworth believes that livability and beauty are essential to every design endeavor. This belief has been instrumental in some of the Washington, DC metro area’s most recognized home renovations.

Inspired by a shared interest in sustainable design and artfully crafted buildings, we established our practice in 2003. We bring a detail-oriented approach to building design, developed over three decades of professional practice working on a range of projects from large scale commercial and institutional buildings to private homes in Washington DC and the surrounding region. The focus of our practice is residential architecture. Whether a project involves a renovation, an addition to an existing building or new construction, we offer full architectural services at a highly personalized level. Our clients are central to the design process and we keep them continuously involved. Our approach is to foster a team approach in which all team members including us — from energy modelers to engineers, contractors to owners — are encouraged to be involved from the very beginning in order to make critical decisions about the materials, systems, and building technologies that form the basis for the design. We believe that this approach creates architecture which is integrated, holistic and innovative, while at the same time considerate of its environmental impact. While our work is devoted to a concern for space, light, order, and craft, it is guided by our commitment to environmental stewardship through responsible, inventive design and professional leadership. Environmental issues and architecture are intrinsically linked at every level and we believe that, as architects, we are positioned to provide leadership in environmental responsibility. For these reasons we have continuously grown our interest and knowledge base in sustainable design. We view a sustainable design approach as not only productive and essential to our profession of designing buildings, but fundamentally important to us as we contemplate what kind of world we will leave to our children.

Founded in 2005, Ballard + Mensua is a full service architecture firm with a specialty in truly unique and custom homes and renovations. We help our clients with projects of all sizes, whether helping a young family with a master plan to build in phases as they can afford, or designing dream homes to retire to on the water or in the mountains. Our unique cost study process helps to offer the advantages of design build, with the checks and balances of independent architect and builder. While many architects do not understand construction well, or interiors well, we believe in a fully integrated project management approach. We handle all aspects of a project, including all architectural design, interior design and decorating, landscape design and construction management. Our drawings are both client friendly, and contractor friendly. We detail drawings in a way that tells the contractors exactly what to build and our details work because we have built before. We value our contractor and vendor relationships as much as our client relationships. After Seth Ballard's 25 years of practice, these relationships allow us to build virtually anything, no matter how custom. We have a further specialty in historic preservation. Ballard Mensua however, loves working in every style .. we find it more fun to work on a contemporary, a Georgian, a colonial and an arts and crafts house all at the same time. We are proud to announce that after 2 years of working with on a major farm house renovation project, Frank Bell, formerly of Frank Bell Builders will be teaming up with Ballard Mensua to handle design and Construction Management for a variety of projects. Frank is one of the best designers and custom home builders the region has ever had and we are proud to join forces. Additionally Amanda Provost will also be joining us to help strengthen our interior design team.
