Among all the problems with this 1941 bungalow bathroom, one of the client’s main concerns was to get rid of the lighthouse wallpaper border! At a mere 34 square foot, this tiny bath struggled to meet minimal code requirements let alone be functional. Given that the bathroom was flanked by two bedroom closets we had room to rearrange and steal space. The toilet stack was located right behind the existing toilet so we converted that area to a hallway accessible linen closet. The toilet was moved directly across the room into the opposing closet. The drain pipe fit nicely between existing floor joists and did not alter the ceiling in the basement below. Pocketing the door gave us added clear floor space. Now, with a clear floor space of 41 square foot we could give the client a 36” wide toilet opening, a 36” vanity, and a walk in shower with bench. The design is very masculine characterized by denim looking tile in black and grey, a pulley theme in both the slide bar handshower and light fixtures, and industrial knurling on the plumbing and cabinet hardware typically found on mechanics tools. We set the seat of the wall hung toilet at 19” and the vanity countertop at 36”, both comfort height for a 6’2” man.
