The best architecture allows what has come before it to be seen and cared for while at the same time injecting something new, if not idealistic. Spartan at first glance, the interior of this stately apartment building, located on the iconic Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, quickly begins to unfold as a calculated series of textures, visual artifacts and perfected aesthetic continuities.
The client, a globe-trotting entrepreneur, selected Jeanne Schultz Design Studio for the remodel and requested that the space be reconditioned into a purposeful and peaceful landing pad. It was to be furnished simply using natural and sustainable materials. Schultz began by gently peeling back before adding only the essentials, resulting in a harmoniously restorative living space where darkness and light coexist and comfort reigns.
The design was initially guided by the fireplace—from there a subtle injection of matching color extends up into the thick tiered molding and ceiling trim. “The most reckless patterns live here,” remarks Schultz, referring to the checkered green and white tiles, pink-Pollack-y stone and cast iron detailing. The millwork and warm wood wall panels devour the remainder of the living room, eliminating the need for unnecessary artwork.
A curved living room chair by Kave Home punctuates playfully; its shape reveals its pleasant conformity to the human body and sits back, inviting rest and respite. “It’s good for all body types and sizes,” explains Schultz. The single sofa by Dareels is purposefully oversized, casual and inviting. A beige cover was added to soften the otherwise rectilinear edges. Additionally sourced from Dareels, a small yet centrally located side table anchors the space with its dark black wood texture, its visual weight on par with the larger pieces. The black bulbous free standing lamp converses directly with the antique chandelier above. Composed of individual black leather strips, it is seemingly harsh—yet its soft form is reminiscent of a spring tulip.
The continuation of the color palette slips softly into the dining room where velvety green chairs sit delicately on a cascade array of pointed legs. The doors that lead out to the patio were sanded down and treated so that the original shape and form could be retained. Although the same green paint was used throughout, this set of doors speaks in darker tones alongside the acute and penetrating daylight. A few different shades of white paint were used throughout the space to add additional depth and embellish this shadowy texture.
Specialty lights were added into the space to complement the existing overhead lighting. A wall sconce was added in the living room and extra lighting was placed in the kitchen. However, because of the existing barrel vaulted tile ceiling, sconces were placed on the walls rather than above to avoid penetrating the existing architecture.

The fireplace was hand inspected and preassembled by Tecta. 49 stone segments and carvings craft this magnificent, custom Tudor stone mantle. Site specific openings, ceiling height and room configurations were incorporated into the design. To make the installation go as smooth as possible the installation was strategically planned out in advance and conformity to the design and quality was supervised by the project architect.

The garden transforms a a leftover space between a tall house and steep slope on Buena Vista Hill into a landscaped plant-lined gathering space with seating and a small fountain.
The existing space consisted of a small patio and series of poorly placed retaining walls. Two curved walls are preserved and reconfigured into a wide amphitheater-like seating area. A set of horizontal steel planters conform to the curve of the long existing wall, drawing the eye across the garden. The matte steel finish provides a muted reflection of greens that is constantly changing the position of the sun.
Plants were chosen for their drought-tolerant qualities and variety of colors and shades.

The owners of this row house have a tiny backyard, so wanted to create alternative outdoor space on the roof. We designed a new interior stair that gives them comfortable access, as well as conforms to the strict local regulations regarding structures on roofs. In addition to the hot tub, there's an exterior kitchen with a grill, sink, and refrigerator, plus two comfortable seating areas.

Any of the work we have done on this Louis Kahn house had to meet with all the architectural conformities of Louis Kahn's design. Creating motorized solar shade protection for the eastern exposed window wall and for the western exposed kitchen, blackout draperies for the home theater, and even the wood blinds in the bedrooms, has all had their share of challenges. But each time, the challenge was met with a solution that both pleased the home owner and held up to the standards deserving of this structure.

A 3-story staircase w/glass windows gives stunning views of conservation land and is the centerpiece of the house. Radiant heat provides pleasant warmth all winter while green roofing and solar panels insulate and power the home—all contained within a passive-level thermal envelope, ventilated by the latest Zehnder air-exchange technology providing the very best in indoor air quality. The kitchen’s outfitted with top notch appliances: Miele dishwasher, Sub-Zero fridge, Sub-Zero wine fridge, Wolf induction cooktop plus oven.

Originally a single family home, this four unit apartment building was broken up in a way that each apartment has a different layout. The challenge for Piperbear Designs was how to reimagine each space to conform with the needs of the modern tenant – while also adding design flourishes that will make each unit feel special.
Located on historic West Grace in Richmond, Virginia, the property is surrounded by a mix of attractive single family homes and small historic apartment buildings. Walking distance to the Science Museum of Virginia, Monument Ave, many hip restaurants, this block is a sought after location for young professionals moving to Richmond.
Piperbear wanted to restore this building in a manner that respects the history of the area while also adding a design aesthetic that is in touch with the change happening in Richmond.

Shower walls are Daltile 13x26 Cortina and match the 13 x 13 floor tile to provide a more spacious appearance.
To make the shower more open and visible 3/8 glass panels are used for part of the enclosure. The doorless entry is by the windows in the drying area.
