Design work for this eclectic 1900’s home in Maplewood started with making infrastructure improvements throughout the house. The new owners wanted systems that would be energy efficient and ecologically friendly. We installed a very high efficiency HVAC system, replaced the piping and plumbing throughout, and specified new super high efficiency windows. Other exterior improvements included new leaders and gutters, insulation, and new siding in some locations. These upgrades were balanced with maintaining as many as the original details of the house as possible. When you walk into the house, you still sense the original character and charm of the house, but are surrounded by modern amenities and environmentally sensitive finishes. Specific renovations include updated and reconfigured bathrooms throughout, a new kitchen, finishing of the basement, and repurposing of several rooms so the house would have better flow. In 2011 the family moved back to New York City, and new owners purchased this Maplewood home. We had the pleaser of working with them to design further improvements to the house necessitated by their growing family. We added a porte cochere, a family-room, and increased the ceiling height in their master bedroom. These improvements augmented our design work previously completed in 2008, and the house continues to be a blend of traditional old-house details with modern, contemporary furnishings that perfectly suite a family with young children.

The focus of this home remodeling project was to make a Skyline home more comfortable and functional for a large family of six. Designed by Circulation Architecture and built by Hammer & Hand, this project included a kitchen remodel, new custom-built dog house, and updates to the home’s HVAC systems. The team transformed the dark, earth-toned kitchen into a bright, light-filled space for the family to spend time in. New tile, countertops, and paint gave the kitchen a new look while built-ins and adjustments to the area around the stove range added more functionality. The owners of this Hopkins two-story home were looking to transform a 3-season porch into a new great room, while adding a finished basement bedroom below and amazing deck above; and make it look like it was always there - part of the original house. The basement was designed and constructed for Minnesota winters. After the site was excavated, new walls were constructed beginning with R-10 Exterior Insulation and waterproofing on a newly poured concrete foundation. Then framing up walls and finally installing the drywall. Drain tile and a sump pump were installed around the perimeter to keep moisture out and the bedroom dry. A second HVAC system was also added to provide separate zoned heating in the basement and first floor. The new basement’s 480 sq. ft. space includes bedroom with large walk-in closet and additional storage accessible from the adjacent existing family room. Two side-by-side egress windows were installed to make this a legal bedroom. The bonus: The windows brighten the bedroom with lots of natural light from a southern exposure. In the exterior photo you can see a unique window well treatment, using larger rocks and boulders to create a natural look while meeting building codes. The first floor Great Room is just that: almost 500 sq. feet of open, bright space off the existing kitchen. Makes home entertaining easy. A sliding glass door and short flight of stairs invites guests into the back yard patio for a bonfire, barbeque, or some putting. The patio features a unique design using stone slabs of varying shapes to create a one-of-a-kind look. On the second floor we replaced a window and added a sliding glass door for easy access to the new deck. It’s made with the same materials and design used on the ground level patio. To keep water, snow, and ice outside the roof is made with a special membrane surrounded by an integral gutter with downspouts. The post-to-post tempered glass railings make this deck feel wide open to a surprisingly secluded back yard. Finally, we used grey cement board for the siding, matching the white trim around doors and windows. This project added almost 1,000 sq. ft. of interior living space and another 500 sq. ft. of second floor deck, constructed in a way to last a lifetime. And the addition really doesn’t look like an addition. It feels wide open to a surprisingly secluded back yard.

This 2,500 sq. ft. commercial facility was meticulously designed to accommodate up to seven writers’ rooms and production suites—each capable of operating simultaneously without interruption, with four of the rooms built for mixing capabilities. With seamless audio integration throughout, the space ensures intuitive connectivity no matter where you are on the property. The aesthetic palette, paired with a loud and quirky speakeasy vibe, creates a fun atmosphere that reflects the owners’ personalities. The result is not just a studio that feels effortless—it’s an inspiring environment where writing, mixing, and production can happen with minimal sound transmission. Behind the walls, the architectural acoustics are second to none. The design emphasizes a true “plug-and-play” workflow: each control room, both isolation booths, and all common areas are acoustically isolated with extraordinary attention to detail. Each suite is equipped with dedicated, silent 1:1 HVAC systems. Eight independent floating-floor systems support the suites, while tailored sound-reducing wall assemblies and intentional treatments in the main suites deliver clarity and precision for mixing. Archadeck of Central SC designed and built this deluxe outdoor living space that includes a custom sunroom and an elevated Trex composite deck with white vinyl railing. Trex was the inventor of wood-alternative composite decking. Choosing Trex for this lakeside deck helped us achieve the low-maintenance, high-performance backyard retreat these homeowners had in mind. The spacious and airy sunroom is accessible from two separate deck entrances. The vaulted design and large gable-end windows ensure the room is bathed in natural light. The interior of the sunroom boasts a ceramic tile floor, sliding windows and a Mitsubishi mini-split ductless heating & AC unit. This system provides zoned comfort solutions for year-round comfort and is up to 40% more efficient than traditional HVAC systems.

This home had such great potential, but its original floor plan did not encourage a natural flow. The bathroom was hard for guests to find and the kitchen and living room were separated by two large fireplaces. We added structural beams, relocated the HVAC system, and replaced the water heater with an on-demand system, creating a larger continuous space that is comfortable for entertaining or family nights at home.
