These clients bought a Mid-century house with a vintage landscape that left something to be desired. Both the clients as well as myself have a great appreciation for midcentury design and its clean lines but the majority of the landscapes found in Mid-century housing developments across America miss the mark when it comes to more current sensibilities. The midcentury American philosophy was that man should exert dominance over the land and that hedge trimmers and lawn mowers are mans best friends. Today more enlighten landscape designers strive to create landscapes that work with nature and not dominate it. In this project we did just that. These home owners loved the view of the mountains from their back yard in Santa Barbara, the way the warm colored sand stone boulders peak through muted greens of the Chaparral. We designed this landscape to be of its place. Sourcing local sandstone boulders like to ones found in the mountains behind the house we used then to build a low retaining wall. By breaking the sloping land into two flatter sections we are able to slow down the speed at which water evacuates the property giving it a chance to soak into the soil. This allows the landscape to work like a natural mini water shed, keeping the storm drains and then the oceans overwhelmed with polluted water and providing more water to the plants with less irrigation. When it came to the plants, the clients wanted low water color and texture. To celebrate the fact that the house is located in Santa Barbara county we wanted to incorporate the muted green tones, with pops of colorful foliage. Using a mix of course lots of California native plants and Mediterranean adapted plants we created a plant plate that is beautiful, low maintenance and flutters with native fauna such as bird, and butterflies and bees.

Installed across all four walls, it adds charm and texture without overwhelming the small space. Matte black fixtures and a vessel sink finish the look.

This remarkable renovation reimagines an entire lower level into a multi-room retreat that reads less like a basement and more like a private members' club. Every inch was designed with intention — layering bold textures, curated art, and a confident mix of moody and luminous palettes to create a space that is simultaneously dramatic and deeply livable. Main Living Area The heart of this renovation is a sweeping living room where refined restraint meets expressive design. Walls are finished with architectural fluted millwork banding near the ceiling — a detail that adds rhythm and sophistication without overwhelming the space. Flanking panels of delicately patterned textured wallpaper frame a striking large-scale abstract canvas in black, white, and gold, which serves as both the focal point and the color story for the entire room. Open shelving built into the backsplash wall displays sculptural art objects — including a carved Buddha head and white abstract sculptures — reinforcing the home's gallery aesthetic. A brass spring-coil faucet, integrated beverage refrigerator, and patterned swirl-print ottomans tucked beneath the island make this bar equally functional and unforgettable. Game Room A complete tonal departure, the game room embraces deep, moody drama through floor-to-ceiling dark olive green walls and ceiling. A large-format sage green square tile accent wall grounds a wall-mounted flat screen TV, while a mahogany billiard table with slate blue felt takes center stage on a vintage-style area rug. This kitchen features Gold and Silver 1 1/4" granite counter tops with a Demi Bullnose edge, stainless steal appliances and sink. The backplash is MS International's 3"x6" Tumbled Tuscany Gold Travertine accented by Westside Glass Mosaic's MA-18S. While it would have been easy to get overwhelmed by the busy counter top, the combination of the warm travertine field tile and the modern glass and stone mosaic instead tame the wild granite by using only colors that already appear in the stone.

When the owners of this Queen village contemporary townhouse embarked on upgrading their home to something more akin to their design sensibilities, high on their list was a true European kitchen. We responded with a sleek stainless and oak design featuring Mobalco Cabinetry from Spain. Besides being a sensational backdrop to the adjacent open dining room, the kitchen also services their needs (and wants) as serious cooks. The reflective nature of the huge, stainless pantry keeps its size and capacity from overwhelming while bouncing light into the windowless space. In contrast, the grainflow-matched white oak, with it's sensual integrated handles, creates a soothing relief from the stainless's hard edges. Similarly, the cubist lines of the white and deep gray quartz countertops play nicely off the gentle curves of the marble's veining. The new kitchen, along with the new floors, stair railing and fireplace that the owners created have made a space that they love coming home to.
