This full first-floor renovation transformed a family home in Northwest Indiana, originally built in the early 2000s, into a personalized, highly functional space that better reflects the lifestyle and taste of its four residents. The remodel included the kitchen, living room, a reimagined dining room turned sitting room, office, mudroom, and laundry room. The clients’ main objective was to move beyond dated, builder-grade finishes and create a home that felt curated, warm, and distinctive—infused with layered textures, custom details, and a sense of ease. The living room posed the biggest design challenge, with awkward furniture placement due to two structural columns. We used these features to anchor a revised layout, integrating custom built-ins for storage and balance, and adding mixed metals and refined textures for visual depth. A former dining room was transformed into a moody sitting room—contrasting the neutral palette used throughout the rest of the main floor, while still complementing it. The mudroom was reworked from a tight, underutilized space into a practical, polished drop zone with custom cabinetry and stylish utility. Throughout the renovation, our team focused on improving flow, enhancing functionality, and blending each room’s unique character into a cohesive, elevated whole—resulting in a home that’s as livable as it is beautifully tailored.

This modern farmhouse entryway pairs a dark carved wood front door with polished concrete flooring and industrial style lighting for a striking, textural welcome. Reclaimed Wood Sliding Barn Doors with a metal hardware kit open into a home office beyond, adding rustic character and function to the transitional space. Every piece of reclaimed wood at Manomin Resawn Timbers is salvaged from 19th and early 20th century barns, factories, and warehouses, structures built during the Industrial Revolution from old growth hardwoods that grew slower and denser than the trees available today. Through our detailed process of denailing, kiln drying, and precision milling, that history is preserved and prepared for a new life in modern homes. Whether you are a homebuilder, a home remodeling contractor, a homeowner, or a designer planning a space like this one, Manomin Resawn Timbers has reclaimed wood sliding barn doors to fit your vision. Visit our showroom in Hugo, MN or reach out to us with a call or a message to discover the antique charm of reclaimed wood.

We approached this new build as a seamless, full-service collaboration between architecture and interiors. Every decision—structural, spatial, and aesthetic—was shaped with intention, not to mention collaboration, since our contractor was also our client. Our contractor said, “make the rooflines simple and direct the water away.” His wife said, “I like color.” Check, and check. The bold exterior lines of the home both contrast with and recede into the woods around it, and the interiors are layered with cheerful hues, custom details, and playful patterns. Each room carries its own moment of cheer, while the overall palette ties together into a cohesive, uplifting whole, not unlike its namesake rainbow.

Double glass front doors at the home's foyer provide a welcoming glimpse into the home's living room and to the beautiful view beyond. A modern bench provides style and a handy place to put on shoes, a large abstract piece of art adds personality. The compact foyer does not feel small, as it is also open to the adjacent stairwell, two hallways and the home's living area.
