This Southern California yard was designed for year-round outdoor use after addressing drainage challenges. Two large percolation pits were installed, along with a raised pathway that connects different areas while guiding heavy rainfall from El Niño storms toward the percolation zones and away from the rest of the property. The result is a practical drainage solution combined with a landscape featuring, a fire-pit, fountains, many native plants and fruit trees.

This garden blends sustainably sourced materials with the timeless design principles shared by traditional Japanese architecture and the early Craftsman movement, interpreted through clean contemporary lines. Rich wood detailing, stone and concrete elements, permeable pathways, and drought-tolerant planting define a series of intimate outdoor rooms that encourage exploration, reflection, and year-round living. The result is a warm, environmentally conscious landscape where craftsmanship, simplicity, and a seamless connection between architecture and nature create a refined modern retreat.
