Sometimes a deep carpet cleaning is in order, and while you can rent carpet cleaners, it’s always better to have one at home just in case — especially if you have a large family, pets or both. Hardwood, tile and laminate floors can also benefit greatly from a steam mop, which can remove the need for harsh cleaning chemicals by steaming away stains and grime. Before you jump in and start your cleaning spree, however, take some time to consider your needs.
While you may not have many options when it comes to rental cleaners, your household carpet shampooer requires at least a few decisions:
• Water reservoir size: Most important when shopping for a new carpet shampooer is to keep in mind how much weight you can easily push around and even lift. While a larger tank can be best since it requires fewer refills, it adds to the weight of the machine. Try to find a design that is a compromise between water tank size and overall weight.
• Lots of suction: What’s worse than having a dirty carpet? Being stuck with a soggy one for hours after you’ve finished cleaning. That being said, make sure your new carpet shampooer has enough suction to remove all the water it sprays onto your floors.
• Powered brushes: While some models feature a brush attachment that lets you manually scrub away at any stains, others offer powered brushes. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to tell you that powered is better — for your arms and hands, as well as for getting out those tough stains!
• Cord length: No one likes having to put their cleaning on pause and fuss with a cord. Look for a model with a cord that’s at least 15 feet.
• Attachments: Most carpet cleaners come with extra attachments, such as an extension hose or upholstery brushes. Make sure the model you’re planning to take home has attachments to cover all your needs.
Steam mops are great at scrubbing your hard floors until they gleam. While traditional mops are fairly simple in design, a steam mop comes with more than a few options for you to consider:
• Water reservoir: Just as with your carpet shampooer, you’ll want a large water tank to avoid having to refill every few minutes or so. Weight tends to be less of an issue with steam mops, but you may still want to keep it in mind while making your choice. Also look for a water tank that’s easy to fill. Some feature a funnel and cup, while others make refills a breeze by having removable water reservoirs.
• Steam control: Stains on your floors don’t come in “one size fits all,” so neither should your steam cleaner. The best styles allow you to control how much steam is released while you clean, giving you the power to tackle those obnoxious, set-in stains without breaking a sweat.
• Cord length and power switch: Again, having the luxury of a 15-foot or longer cord makes cleaning easier. Check to see if your steam mop also offers a power switch, which allows you to choose when you’re ready to clean rather than having to plug in to turn on your steam cleaner.
