What you see is a secondary ceiling with recessed cans installed in it. Above that is the true ceiling with some kind of lighting installed near the edge (tubes, cans, rope lighting) so that it gives a beautiful, consistent glow. Maybe the designer will give us more details. It's a very nice look!
