Rustic Wine Basement Remodel

The homeowner’s had two main requirements for the space – a place to relax and now watch television along with a functioning work space to cultivate the homeowner’s passion for making wine… and drinking wine. Aesthetically, the homeowners wanted a more rustic, relaxed feel. To achieve this look, several changes were made. A full-length wall of stacked stone was installed, making a dramatic focal point. It’s also the first introduction to the space as you descend the staircase. The old carpet was removed and a new rustic wood-look laminate floor was installed. New cabinetry played a major role in the transformation, in look and function. Cherry cabinets in a Cappuccino stain with Burnt Sienna glaze and highlights fit the bill nicely. Incorporated in the television viewing zone were 24” deep wall cabinets to form a base console that houses audio/visual components, along with cleverly concealing the home’s main water shut-off. A wide screen television was installed on the stone wall centered above the console.
In the wine making/enjoying zone, the same cabinets were used to create functional storage on one end with a large single bowl sink and garbage pull-out. On the other end, the upper cabinets create a beautiful display for stemware and wine bottles. The base cabinets store additional spirits on a roll-out tray along with deep drawers for more storage. The Dekton countertops in Trillium are very durable and create the perfect look. Adequate space was left between the cabinets should any future owners wish to install a full-size refrigerator. For these homeowners, the wine corker mounted to a family wine barrel occupies the space. A decision was made not to install a permanent island in the space, but instead opted for a movable rolling table that is multi-functional.
Tapping into their rich Italian traditions of family, food, and friends (and wine) a trip was made to rummage through a family barn to recover a few treasured pieces for use in the renovation. The bar height pub table base is an authentic wine press used by the homeowners grandfather, complete with the press mechanism protruding up through the glass table top. The wood top on the stainless steel rolling table belonged to the homeowner’s father, and served as his work bench top. All the nicks and dents bring fond memories of his dad. The shelves on the stone wall were also fashioned out an old table.
