Multi-purpose rooms make so much sense. This space answers the needs of most families: lots of storage for shoes, a place to hang a coat, leave a message, keep schedules visible, charge the cell phones, sign school notes ... those drawers even look wide enough to keep wrapping supplies handy.

It is most certainly a mud room, and innovative at that. If you live in a climate that requires a room like this you would get it. It takes room to take off all your boots, hats, gloves, etc when you come in from the cold. A spacious area where you can sit and do this, then put away all the clothes, it is brilliant.. The floor is designed to be easy to clean and handle anything from water to mud. It has a desk / check in area for just that - to look at the family calender, put away keys, cell phones whatever. write a check to the pizza guy . I think it is wonderful.

love this question-also looking for a good answer!! have a great boot room that looks so great and works great from all design perspectives, but when 3 boys come in from the basketball courts, it only smells like a locker room-forget nice looking or functional!!

These trays come in stock sizes and are widely available. For a customized space you could buy rubber backed walk-out in rolls at a hardware store and cut to size. You wouldn't have the raised edges but it would keep shelves clean and dry.

I think they are just boot "trays", you can get them very cheap at Menards, they are black plastic.

If you happen to be a type A personality, like me, you're going to especially love these first few images. Built-in storage is a dream and makes it possible to customize a space to exactly fit your needs. The shoe storage wall unit shown here is perfect for large families. Children's shoes can be stored on the bottom shelves where they can be easily grabbed; adults can store theirs up high.

Shoes. Maybe putting shoes away in the bedroom closet seems like the normal thing to do, but who cares? This is your home, and if having a space for all of your shoes near your door serves you better, then it's the right choice. Not all homes have the space for shelves like these, but you can always outfit a front closet with shelves for shoes or add a rack near the door for shoes you wear every day.

don't like the style but Like the functionality here: In the main entry, I need a place to drop the mail, to store the shoes, to hang the coats. I need to keep the "stuff" out of the main house
