My guess is that it was a dark stain on oak. I just refinished my red oak mantel in espresso, and it looks similar. I only did one coat then applied four coats of polyurethane.

The theater room door was an old door that the homeowners purchased from one of our suppliers. This door was something that the supplier had made and used in their showroom so I'm not sure where they had it made.
