A raised garden offers a great way to control the quality of your soil, as you can fill it with a mix of topsoil, planting mix and compost. This deep, rich soil mix will allow you to grow more vegetables than you could in the same square footage of regular garden soil.

Turn, water, wait, weed: A simplified mantra for prepping a new garden bed.Soil prep. A great garden begins with great soil: Don't skimp on this vital task. The goal of soil preparation and amendment is to create a healthy soil microbial suite — the microflora and microfauna that are essential to breaking down organic material that other soil flora and fauna convert to soluble plant nutrients. (Admittedly, this is an over-simplification of the process. The point is, be good to your soil, and it will be good to you.)Soil prep will depend on what you're planting. Spread compost. Compost is nature’s perfect soil amendment. It loosens clay soils to allow better water and air penetration, and when added to sandy or gravelly soils, compost forms organic aggregates that retain water and nutrients. Use compost as a top dressing around vegetables, flowers, trees and shrubs, working it into the soil lightly. A summertime application of compost will help the soil retain moisture and also stimulate the growth of beneficial microorganisms. You may use your own compost or purchase Class I compost (which can be used any time of year in any type of soil) from a reliable supplier.
