Actually raised starfish, sea reeds, fish, and textured barnacle elements are in this 3D painting by Ruth Collis. Shiny clear coat gives a watery undersea look. ALL elements are entirely acrylic paint; no mixed media added.
Ruth had visited a little local aquarium, Cabrillos Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, California and took some starfish pictures of their tank, then went home and turned the photo to a line drawing and made this template her online students could trace over, using the same thick paint, let dry and peel off, then place in their own painting.
The drying of paint on a separate layer was also implemented by Ruth Collis into the fine art field. This painting is a result of being able to create starfish for paintings out of thick paint and now eliminate the need to use real starfish in a painting or in decorating and save our environment with respect to the lives of sea creatures and their natural habitat. This helps save wildlife and by being made of paint, there is no organism decay in the painting and can be archival. Gritty & smooth textures were applied.
Barnacles made with special brush technique; sea reeds, fish, and starfish were made with cake decorating tips. Beveled edge canvas showcases the 3D elements uniquely. For more closeup views and video on the makings and presentation of the painting rotated and turned, see link here:
