A Beachy Cape Cod Kitchen
Project Design: Sara Call, showroom manager, Best Tile; Cheryl Harrington, architectural designer, Longfellow Design Build.
Sharon and Ron Nunes loved their traditional Cape Cod house in Teaticket, Mass., but they wanted a more beach-like feel.
“The original plan was to transform a small kitchen, living room, and sunroom into one large, open space with our major goal being an updated kitchen and improved kitchen design,” Sharon Nunes said.
Through an intensive remodel, the couple moved the kitchen from south facing to north facing and developed a palette that would be warm and welcoming, with ocean colors as a general theme.
The kitchen backsplash was the last design decision and it had to blend in with the seaside palette. To find just the right surface, they worked with Sara Call, showroom manager, Best Tile of New England in Plymouth, Mass. The answer? Tommy Bahama by Lunada Bay Tile 1x4 Brick in Kangaroo Island.
“We didn’t want one-color tile all around, so we felt this decision might be a tough one,” Nunes said. “We were in the tile store about 10 minutes when we saw a sample of the Lunada Bay mosaic, and just fell in love with it! It worked so well with everything else we had already done.”
The lustrous mosaic blend is the perfect complement to the soft greens, turquoise and beige in the couple’s décor.
“The backsplash tile is very different from what I was originally thinking, so I’ll just say go with your gut—you know when you have a winner,” Nunes said. “Every time we have a visitor, their first comment is about the beautiful backsplash, so it truly has become the focal point we had hoped for. We wake up every day and can’t believe how beautiful our ‘new’ home is.”
