The new law, which went into effect in New Hampshire on June 1, 2017 created the "accessory dwelling unit". It is defined as a residential living unit that is within or attached to a single-family dwelling, and that provides independent living facilities for one or more persons, including the provisions for sleeping, eating, cooking, and sanitation on the same parcel of land as the principal dwelling unit it accompanies.

Originally a two story, single family home, an accessory dwelling has been added right alongside it. Built for a retired couple to live alongside their son and daughter in law, all their needs are met in this accessible dwelling. Each couple can enjoy their own privacy while also being close together.
