Black Mountain is the prominent peak of the McCullough Mountain Range in Southern Nevada. Formed of volcanic rock, the mountain range creates the backdrop for the City of Henderson, which is located at its base.

The design concept developed out of an analysis of the existing context. The abstracted outcome is that of a building structure as a base on which the Black Mountains perch. Simple volumetric forms repurposed in materials to represent the rocky, angular formations of the Black Mountains tie the design to the specific place. The design incorporates a series of passive techniques:
-Overhangs to Shade
-Natural Convection
-Cross Circulation
-Roof Gardens
-Self-Shading Forms
-Protected Daylighting
-Material Selection/ Locally Sourced
-Landscape to Cool

programming requirements: The building houses two independent dental facilities on separate levels. The second level, occupied by the building owner, provides several exam rooms, restrooms, reception lobby, waiting lounge, equipment room, storage rooms, employee lounge, a private outdoor gathering deck, and a private office.

The project is located within a heavily used arterial street in Henderson, NV. Surrounding office complexes are primarily medical, with a hospital in the immediate vicinity. The site provides a distant view to the Las Vegas Strip and into the Black Mountains.

Sited prominently at the intersection, the faceted second level becomes the sign of the business. Differing in form and material, the building itself serves as a recognizable image for the business and the intersection.
