Al Tahoe
The primary objective of this home was to create an exceptional aesthetic experience for the occupants and the public, while creating an enduring, high performance home that impacted the neighborhood and building site as little as possible.
The design commenced with the objective of placing the home to fit on the site delicately among the old growth trees of the historic Al Tahoe neighborhood, removing as few trees as possible. The unique and organic shape of the home snakes through the trees and from every vantage point the angles change while the lines carry through perfectly. From the sides, the appearance is meant to blend with the environment while counterpoint of materials at the ends define the entrances to the home. The natural birch siding is intentionally untreated, meant to age and change character over time, slowly perfecting to a weathered silver.
The building envelope was evaluated by the team to find the optimal solution balancing aesthetic, durability, performance and budget. Mechanical systems were also looked at from the perspective of efficiency and the health of the occupants. As a team we solved for the best outcome.
Finally, the interior needed to provide an exceptional experience. While the exterior is predominantly natural in appearance, the polycarbonate gable ends allude to a modern design. This is answered upon entering the home where materials and lines are clean and sleek. Unexpected shapes and spaces are at every step.
