Attic Playroom Transformation
The existing attic space of this three-story home was like many others – unfinished space used for storage, but the owners saw potential for its conversion into much more valuable space. Several issues had to be overcome before the vision of a complete entertaining space could be realized, including existing ductwork which crisscrossed the room.
A loft space was designed to take advantage of the high ceilings and provide a kids’ playspace. The concept was inspired by treehouses – a wood ladder and continuous vertical screen provides an enclosed and safe room with visibility of the parents below. The majority of the ductwork could be concealed within built-in seating located along walls, while one main run was converted to a modern steel duct and hugged tight against the ceiling.
This conversion adds nearly 1,000 square feet of usable living space to the house, while providing a personalized design to meet these homeowners’ specific needs.
