These owners sought some improved appearances for this old "vinyl box" - their first thought was newer siding and a paint job. We did some careful looking and research, and told them we thought a "sleeping beauty" may be hiding beneath all that vinyl. Gradually, we exposed the house's original Victorian character: the third floor gable end became a recessed open-air loggia opening out from the renovated attic studio; roof rafter and window details uncovered, and overall character restored. To enhance outdoor livability, we designed an enlarged, wrap-around front porch transitioning into an open pergola to link house to gardens, and eventually an expanded side and rear porch. Newly-designed porch additions, restored details, and a more period-like paint scheme all worked together to produce a "new-old" Victorian, now well-suited to newer living standards, and a newly- awakened beauty was returned to the old neighborhood.
