Located within the small, upscale shore community of Brielle New Jersey, this residence presented an exciting challenge in residential site design. Facing such constraints as significant grade change, privacy and limited space, the clients’ desire for the site was to create a backyard “oasis” where they could entertain friends and relatives. Utilizing the element of water to achieve a sense of tranquility, the site’s dominating feature is the extensive, meandering swimming pool and tiered waterfall. An expansive multi-level terrace combined with a more intimate elevated seating area atop the waterfall provide an assortment of spaces for different levels of entertaining. Woven throughout the site are various outdoor rooms, created not only to provide more spaces for entertaining and add unique experiences. The addition of a colorful footbridge that spans the pool, connecting a smaller poolside terrace to the main terrace enhances this effect. The issue of privacy from the surrounding neighborhood was addressed through the creation of a planted knoll from which the pool’s waterfall originates. To achieve a more natural effect from the site’s principal feature, the stone of the waterfall was carried into the pool to create a seamless transition between the two elements. The overall effect of the site is that of a lush and serene haven.
