Bear Creek Basecamp

The balance of durable materials, an experiential plan, and a modest scale help focus this mountain retreat on the place, people, and adventures.

The orientation, location, and stature of the home seek a minimally intrusive presence in the sparsely populated landscape. Nestled into a dip on a low foothill above a mountain lake, the home’s three volumetrically balanced living vessels organize a sequence of solids and voids, interiors and exteriors under a single unifying roof plane.

The selected materials and finishes minimize maintenance and are intended to weather the harsh environment for future generations. Using the region's hydropower electricity for primary heating and cooling helps push the home toward a net zero carbon emissions goal. Slab on grade floors with radiant heat gather passive solar heat and stabilize interior temperatures with the floor’s thermal mass.
