Black and White is an energy efficient 500 sq.ft. accessory apartment to a large traditional home in the heart of West Asheville built in place of an existing garage. Our design objective was to create a dialog between the old structure and the new through the play of familiar materials used in new, creative ways. We kept the neutral black and white palette of the main residence, giving it a modern twist. The new structure is simple, stripped of decoration, trim and moldings. The window placement is modern, the floor plan is open, spacious and flooded with light. Sustainable materials and systems: small size, city infill, energy efficient aluminum clad wood windows, natural ventilation, optimized daylight and rainwater collection.
