Poised high up on the cliffs at the North end of Black Point Beach, Horizon Reach is a new ocean front residence designed by late Barry Elbasani, FAIA. Tomas Frank took over the project including design of the interiors after Barry's passing. Flanked by a newly replanted hedgerow on the southern side, an unobstructed meadow view to the North, and a newly replanted cypress grove at the front, the site affords the user quiet solitude. The layout of the bedrooms and the main room – whose open floor plan combines kitchen, dining, and living functions – make as much use of the view of the Pacific Ocean as possible. The exterior is clad in clear-heart redwood, while the interior is clad entirely in Douglas fir.
The main room is characterized by large, hanging elements. Suspended from eight cables that splay out in all directions towards the ceiling, a large, custom-made, stainless steel pot rack is centered above a rough-hewn granite kitchen island. Three lights by Louis Poulsen descend through it to illuminate the island. Hanging through the living space are five “enigma” chandeliers by Louis Poulsen, which consist of simple, concentric rings. Comfortable seating is provided along the westerly windows facing the ocean.
The North end of the home features an open tower with a bedroom overlooking the Pacific to the West and the meadow to the North, and a second floor loft. Views from the loft, whose floors are of solid teak, are of the meadow to the North and the cypress trees to the East. An area between the bedroom and bathroom has a built-in desk and built-in sofa with large windows to the north for quiet relaxation.
The second floor south bedroom enjoys views of Blackpoint Beach to the South, the Pacific to the West, and a section of the sky to the North. Flooring here is also of solid teak. Also on the second level is a 20’ X 20’ private sundeck facing the east with views of the trees and the mountains.
Additional common spaces include a library and billiard room. The library features an automatic pipe organ mounted high up on the wall and an illuminated frieze bearing the last names of all the designers and craftspersons involved in realizing Horizon Reach. The billiard room, with its solid teak paneling, copper ceilings, slate floor, and brass light fixtures, is not unlike a museum, as it features many original, restored nautical antiques.
Facing the ocean, the hot tub seats 8 and enjoys great sunset views and whale watching (in season).
