This ocean front 1920's shingled style house is a vacation home for a young family, in Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard. Taking our cue from the neutral colors and materials found in nature, we worked with the homeowners to design the easy relaxed vibe they were seeking. client liked the quiet look of square-edged horizontal paneling with a gray washed finish. We worked with the homeowners to find just the right gray-tinged stain, to which we then matched the cabinetry and built-ins. In the dining area, original beams and bead board were preserved in the ceiling.
The finishes set a modern, pared-down tone for the space, and provided the perfect backdrop for the modern meets hand-hewn furnishings. We selected solid, timeless pieces. For the living area a massive slipcovered sectional sofa and a tin-covered reclaimed-wood coffee table made a comfortable gathering area for family and friends. A pair of spool chairs covered in durable all-weather fabric added seating along with a built-in bench with under storage for toys and games. In the dining area, barn wood was utilized for the top of the dining table, which sits on a base crafted by a local metalworker. Hand crafted Windsor dining chairs with a black matte milk-paint finish provided a graphic counter point to the rustic wood. Ease of use marks this project - iron lanterns over the dining table don’t have glass panels to clean.
Accessories with a global feel enhance the design. We brought back an inlaid side table from India to add a fanciful pattern in the living room. Delicate boudoir pillows add comfort and visual interest to the large sectional. The living area’s jute rug is casual and comfortable, and lends another layer of texture to the room. Nautical bird prints on the wall continue the natural theme.
