California Native Plants- Front and Back Yard Design
This project is designed for homeowners with young children, a dog, and a cat. They wanted a landscape that reflected their love of the outdoors.
In the front yard, a rain garden improves drainage and pulls water away from the house. California native plants provide habitat for local wildlife and focal points of interest.
In the backyard, the focus was creating more shade and outdoor living that can be enjoyed as a family space. A drywell removes water from puddling around the residence and feeds the water loving Willow and Chinese pistache with a deep winter water. It also raises the underground aquifer, so the plants have an under source to pull water from during the summer months. Lawn grows above the drywell to disguise the space. A new arbor was built to provide shade to the residence, and a second arbor creates a separate space for relaxation and reading. Spaces are left open for kids to explore and run around with their dog.
