This house was conceived to relate to its unique coastal setting which has beautiful views of the West Bay where it opens to Nantucket Sound. The facade oriented toward the road maintains a lower single story profile in response to the intimate nature of the neighborhood in which the house sits while the facade oriented toward the water possesses a more monumental quality appropriate to the open landscape of the sea. Due to conservation regulations the floor plan was limited to a 40’x 90’ rectangle. A linear recessed porch with facetted bays, an oriel corner bay and a two story stair bay animate the simple rectangle to recall the picturesque quality and character of the grand shingle style houses of the past.
