Capp's Loft
Set in a converted century-old warehouse in San Antonio’s King William District, the design of this loft was an exercise in restraint. The character of the richly textured warehouse is retained under a floor-to-ceiling wash of “gallery” white. New walls of smooth drywall are painted to match. Old and new are easily distinguished, yet a rich dialog exists in their textural juxtaposition.
Designed for a single executive and art collector who entertains frequently, this monochromatic palette creates the sense of rest both for the eyes between viewing art and the soul between business junkets.
The loft’s four levels—entry, mezzanine, upper, and roof—interlock and can be combined during parties. The upper level, with its linear, sky lit master suite, offers seclusion when desired. At the entry level, the kitchen is entirely contained within a terrazzo island and a suspended cabinet. A series of contrasting stairs—one an enclosed stair in painted wood, one open and steel, and one a brightly painted spiral—highlight the experience of moving from level to level.
