Cat Hollow Remodel
John & Kimberly decided to downsize from their 5 bedroom 3 bath Cedar Park, TX home with a pool. The primary bedroom was upstairs. Kimberly recently retired from teaching, freeing the couple to travel during the school year. Eliminating the pool upkeep made being away easier.
The “new” house was Kimberly’s former home prior to their marriage. It had been a rental for 18 years and sorely needed an update.
The kitchen was small and inefficiently laid out. Kimberly loves to cook and the one room they expected to miss most from the bigger house was the fabulous kitchen.
They had a few remodling ideas for the kitchen that they ran past Mike Griffin at Capitol City Wood Works (who handled the entire interior remodel).
Mike came up with a simple solution that gave them the kitchen the larger, open feel wanted. He took the angled sink and simply extended it straight toward the breakfast area. One side of the breakfast area gained a full length “butler’s bar” - John’s description of the cabinet design.
This resulted in an oversize eat-in galley kitchen. There is room for a center island, but with their big family they prefer the extra open space.
Cabinets are Kraft Maid soft close in Driftwood with black matte hardware. The kitchen sink is a Ruvati single bowl to accommodate the under-sink trash and recycling pull-out. Under cabinet LED lighting and a variety of interior upgrades give the kitchen a gourmet edge. Countertop and backsplash is Silestone Calacatta Gold.
The couple moved their Cafe double oven gas range and chose a 700 CFM Insignia range hood vented outside through the roof. The built-in beverage fridge is also Insignia. Primary fridge is a bespoke Samsung French door in stainless.
Both bathrooms got a total makeover with Kohler fixtures, tile showers, and new vanities. The primary soaking tub remains.
Popcorn was removed and the ceilings retextured to match the walls - which were also primed and repainted Antique White. All of the trim and doors were repainted in Whisper White. Door handles are Kwikset.
Every light fixture was updated, with the Great Room and Primary Bath receiving flush mount LED’s.
A new overstock front door was finished and installed by Mike’s crew.
Flooring throughout is LifeProof Bailey’s Beach waterproof LVP. They chose to run the flooring everywhere - even wet areas - for consistency.
Capitol City Woodworks also upgraded every window (double-hung vinyl low-e glass) siding to Hardie prior to the full interior remodel.
Outside, the yard really needed help! Paul Fuller of Paul’s Lawn and Landscape designed for easy lock and leave. A front basalt hardscape element was designed to accommodate a bench made by one of the couple’s dearest friends. This creates a welcoming element that takes the place of front shrubs for reduced maintenance.
In the back, a couch, two chairs, table, and patio umbrella on the oversize patio (also by Paul’s) provide an inviting outdoor space to relax. The simple yard is inviting while also very easy to maintain. St Augustine grass, a mature oak, crepe myrtle, and a small herb garden are just enough. And the simplicity helps the small yard feel larger.
Kimberly and John are very happy with the results. Family who knew the house before are amazed at the trnsformation.
