Classic Glam Residence in La Crescenta
An elderly artistic couple asked me to style and decorate their home in Los Angeles. The task was to reorganize the space of a one-story house and combine 2 rooms and a kitchen into a large and multifunctional open floor.
There were lots of heavy classic furniture around the house and items dear to the owners, brought from around the world, At the same time those decor items were of questionable style and value, which the owners were ready to part with, because they trusted me.
We chose classical style to blend harmoniously the existing items with newly purchased ones. The living-dining room and the kitchen, overlooking the garden, were combined into a single space in terms of a style and a color scheme. The owners are most hospitable people. They love welcoming guests, setting the table, and just chatting. There is an old retro piano in the back of the room. I got an idea of making the living room in the style of a French colonial musical salon with heavy velvet curtains framing the windows. The large windows of the living room come as sliding doors overlooking the garden with lots of beautiful plants. I wanted to bring the living room and the garden into one color so that the entire living room looks like a large garden.
To do so, I picked light olive color for the walls, and dark green color for the curtains. This color scheme goes well with existing walnut furniture. There were already plants in the house and we added more plants to create the feeling of a tropical colonial home.
In our living room, which has a lot of items brought from travel, the wall decoration makes everything seem easy. A fireplace repainted to match the color of the walls creates a sense of wholeness. We chose velvet for mid-century style sofas and armchairs to maintain a bourgeois feeling, which harmonizes perfectly with the Persian carpets on the floor, adding an oriental touch to the interior. In this house, we managed to create an atmosphere of comfort.
