Clyde Hill Midcentury

This remodel of a midcentury home by Garret Cord Werner Architects & Interior Designers is an embrace of nostalgic ‘50s architecture and incorporation of elegant interiors. Adding a touch of Art Deco French inspiration, the result is an eclectic vintage blend that provides an elevated yet light-hearted impression. The homeowner was in need of a complete reconfiguration, adding additional bedrooms and re-thinking the main living spaces. The redesign of the entry utilizes a pull on axis within the building to create a forced perspective. The kitchen gained storage with the addition of floating cabinets that allows light to flow throughout the hub of the home while still maintaining a division of cozy spaces. Steel beams evoke a hint of an industrial feel, and creates a harmonious combination with the vintage dining table and modern globe chandelier. A fireplace was added to a newly configured master bedroom, positioned to capture more light and enjoy the view of the fully transformed backyard. In the master bathroom, the large window next to the bathtub dissolves the boundaries of the house, brings the outside in, and allows a view into the garden. The homeowner is an avid swimmer and wanted a full length lap pool to replace the one that was in disrepair. The addition of a waterfall placed strategically at the far end of the pool provides a focal point that is enjoyed from multiple interior positions. Also part of the inspiring landscape, a Zen garden was created by converting an outdoor storage space into a clever point of focus.
