COLLECTION 2
In April 2017, in the run-up to Sight Unseen OFFSITE fair, Crosby Studios presented its second collection of signature objects — a chair, a free-standing library bookcase in two sizes, a chandelier and a carpet —under a simple name of Collection 2.
When working on the collection, the Studio’s founder Harry Nuriev strived to maintain the continuity of his already established style built upon the ”aesthetic healing” concept. It is based on Harry’s convicln April 2017, in the run-up to Sight Unseen OFFSITE fair, Crosby Studios presented its second collection of signature objects — a chair, a free-standing library bookcase in two sizes, a chandelier and a carpet — under a simple name of Collection 2.
When working on the collection, the Studio’s founder Harry Nuriev strived to maintain the continuity of his already established style built upon the ”aesthetic healing” concept. It is based on Harry’s conviction that the form of the environment directly affects a person’s self-perception: in his opinion, by looking at classical refined forms one can find harmony and healing. In Collection 2, he focused on minimalism, the idea of which goes through all of his architectural projects. The architect found inspiration in the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia (Palestrina), the Egyptian Temple of Hatshepsut and the shapes used by Russian suprematists.
The chair from Collection 2 is an aggressive manifesto of minimalism. The simple and strict geometry of this signature object is combined with gold metal and pale beige leather, and its unconventional engineering solution – a concealed spinning disc – makes it a rotating chair. The idea for the chandelier was prompted to the architect by the shapes of heating appliances. He chose the round shape for the lights and fixed four lamps of the same size in the center of a disc giving the entire design a hi-tech edge. Just like in the case of the chair, the lights’ well-conceived design allows you to turn them in any direction and adjust their height. Harry Nuriev recommends using more than one lamp from this series in a project: for example, he used 63 lights of this kind in one of his works.
When creating the library bookcase the founder of Crosby Studios was inspired by ancient Roman and Greek buildings framed with pillars. He employed his favorite technique in its design –strict lines combined with white color. Each library bookcase module can be rotated independently of the other modules, again, thanks to the concealed discs used in Collection 2. It has been Harry Nuriev’s dream to create a handmade carpet. It was inspired by Soviet constructivist public buildings: market places, libraries, consumer service centers. The architect is intrigued by the aesthetics of destructed materials which can be looked at in a fresh new way. In this case, he found the idea for the design in a broken tile he saw in his favorite buildings as a child.
