Western Dovetail was the first company to produce the dovetailed Corner Drawer. In 2004 Blum, Inc. requested that Western Dovetail make a prototype of a solid wood dovetailed corner drawer similar to their metal TANDEMBOX version. The challenge was that there was no known commercial way to produce dovetail joinery at an angle. Max Hunter, president of Western Dovetail, Inc. decided to take to the workbench and devise a method to make such a thing. After a few weeks he had developed a dovetailing fixture that would achieve the 45 degree angle dovetail. The first few corner drawers were made on this custom fixture, but eventually Western Dovetail purchased a custom dovetail machine dedicated to making variable angled dovetails. Now Western Dovetail Makes corner drawers for cabinetmakers and woodworkers across the US and beyond. The new angled dovetail machine opened the door to curved drawers too. Western Dovetail has been recognized in the industry as the leader in innovation for changing the shape of drawers in the industry. Today, Western Dovetail can make nearly any shape of drawer; curved angled and combinations of the two. There is no limit to what Western Dovetail can do. Western Dovetail was the first company to produce a line of standardized and custom corner drawers out of wood and, of course, all dovetailed. The original idea was presented by Blum several years ago when they asked Western Dovetail to make a prototype of a dovetailed corner drawer. Most of the corner drawers you see in pictures are the blum tandembox corner drawers used in Europe. The Wood corner drawers are much more popular in the USA. Typically these drawers are mounted on blum tandem slides. The corner drawer gives you the most convenient acess to the majority of the space. yes you do lose some usable space, but the space you do get is as easy to access as any other drawer. what many people don't realize is that the drawers are much longer than any other drawers, they use 27" slides and are actually over 30" long on the sides. they come way out into the space and they are very easy to acess from either side. I ran some calculations and determined that the corner drawer that we make for a 39" cabinet will give you 4 square feet of storage per drawer. Three drawers as shown above gives you a total of 12 square feet of storage surface. A lazy suzan for the same space will give you 4 1/2" square feet of storage and only has 2 surfaces, so the total storage surface on a lazy susan will be 9 square feet compared to 12 for 3 drawers.
