Ed Castro’s design team was hired by this homeowner to create a park-like garden on the land surrounding the home. Much of the site was overgrown with invasive species, and storm water management was a persistent problem. The finished design incorporates a low impact trail system, a wetland rain garden to capture storm water, and a seating area that incorporates an historic chimney on the site. A desire to keep the area as undisturbed as possible resulted in some creative design solutions. A fully “paved” trail network would have caused greater disturbance to the area, so a number of low impact alternatives were incorporated. Some areas have a gravel treatment, some areas are mulched, and through the meadow, the path is a simple mowed corridor flanked by grasses and wildflowers.
