This project in rural Berks County remains one of our favorites! The clients reached out to request a consultation when they first bought the home; as soon as they had settled, we met to discuss their short and long-term goals for their new home. Privacy plantings were high on their list of priorities, and numerous evergreen trees were planted to create natural barriers from the road and neighbors. In the meantime, we were working on designs for an updated landscape, a rebuilt deck, and landscape lighting.

Despite its quiet rural setting, this home isn’t far from urban areas, and security was a concern. Landscape lighting serves multiple purposes; it highlights the architectural details of the home, showcases select specimens in the landscape, provides a warm welcome with a well-lit walkway, and lastly deters unwanted visitors without resorting to glaring security lights. The existing deck was deteriorating with rotting railings and an odd design. The deck was expanded and covered with a roof. A gas fireplace adds ambiance and warmth, and a grill & griddle combo allows them to whip up amazing meals year-round! Colors and textures were carefully chosen; a rich brown stain was selected for the ceiling, which complements the earth tones of the natural stone veneer and PVC decking. A light colored stain was used on the walls to keep the space airy.

Durable stone, PVC trim and decking, and stainless appliances ensure that minimal maintenance will be needed to keep this dreamy outdoor living area beautiful! Real wood offers an authentic beauty that PVC cannot duplicate, and was used for the walls and ceiling where these natural materials wouldn’t be exposed to rain. Countertop seating allows the parents to sip a drink while providing a view into the backyard and the children’s playground. This space meets the current needs of this young family and will continue to be enjoyed for decades! It provides dining, cooking, and relaxation areas.
