Craftsman Custom Home
This project is the owners' dream home and has been certified platinum by Built Green Canada. The build required the construction of a new home on an existing foundation and the re-connection to an existing cold war era garage with a structural concrete slab and a basement bunker below. The reworked flat roofed garage incorporates a Green Roof with plant life from the owners ranch in Southern Alberta and an outdoor patio.
This entire project was focused around Craftsman style design and re-use of materials. The owners father was a WW2 flight instructor in Southern Alberta and had served in many of the Aircraft Hangars built in Western Canada as part of the War effort.
The materials for flooring, soffit, fascia, doors, timber elements, cabinets, railings, baseboards and casings were all re-purposed from Douglas Fir beams from one of these actual aircraft hangars in Lethbridge, Alberta. These materials helped create a one of a kind connection between the home owners and their personal history. Other recycled and unique materials include slate counters in the kitchen from and old pool table, busts from the London docks, a marble slab from an old printing typesetting press as a laundry table and recycled wire fencing. This home also boasts solar panels, a 3 season patio with removable windows in the master suite, and rainwater recycling.
The result is a truly modern historical home.
