Midcentury modern design is not limited to antiques from the last century. Today we recreate it with a nod to midcentury styling combined with a contemporary twist. These current projects (from several different homes) reflect the undeniable charm that this balanced, modern art inspired design palette provides. Two tone furniture finishes, elliptical or amoeboid glass coffee tables, broad patterned rugs, and linear entertainment consoles all say mid-century. What makes these concepts new again is how they are combined with many types of architecture, a new range of colors and finishes, and the many updated materials that are on the market today. Purists may want to stick with antiques and authentic reproductions, but today's homes, more often than not, require a creative combination of these marvelous design elements with bold scale and a contemporary use of space.
