From this view the spiral stair looks innocent enough. However, it was completely custom crafted, transitioning from open steel to a wood structure with risers as it continues above the ceiling.

When ascending the spiral stair, the eye is first met with this beautiful display. It is a lovely distraction from the fact that one is traveling a full 540 degree spiral, at 14'-6" above the second floor level.

While ascending the stairs, one can look up to see through the suspended glass coffee table all the way to the peak of the cupola.

Display shelves on the way up the stairs are a perfect spot for the owner's collection of blue and white porcelain. Want to know something really cool? The bookshelf on the left slides to the side, revealing attic storage beyond!

This lighted alcove provides the perfect display case for the taller pieces of the owner's porcelain collection. The lights are on a motion sensor, turning on to light the way as one rounds the spiral stair going either up or down.

These custom display shelves are a perfect spot for the owner's collection of blue and white porcelain. Note how the balusters are cut at the display floor level. Just another custom element unique to this space!

The structure supporting the suspended glass table is made entirely of custom parts, thanks to Colonial Iron Works and Blue Anchor Woodworking.

A light soffit conceals LED light strips that illuminate the peaked ceiling. The LEDs can shine in either soft white, light blue or electric blue. At night, from the exterior, the cupola shines likes a beacon in the town!

What a great space to top off a beautiful Victorian home! Built in curvaceous seating is very inviting. The fabrics are from Sunbrella, to withstand fading from abundant sunlight throughout each day.

To maximize the usable space on the cupola level, I designed a glass coffee table to suspend over the spiral staircase. The use of glass in place of vertical railings helps maintain a sense of openness.

A custom stained glass "nautilus medallion" was designed by Kai Colombo to illuminate the peak of the cupola ceiling. It is backlit with LED bulbs, helping to create a wonderfully calming mood in this unique space.
