“My client’s number one wish list item was an island with seating, but there just wasn’t room in their small kitchen even if we stole some space from an adjacent sunroom. The answer was to swap the rooms and put the kitchen in the bigger, sunnier space. The sunroom still couldn’t accommodate a traditional island, so I created a peninsula that works like one and feels like a piece of furniture. Dutch Made was able to set it on feet and make it as one piece to really reinforce the look we wanted.
To get extra seating in the dining area, I added a bench seat below the window, custom-made on-site from beautifully finished Dutch Made wainscot panels and moldings. To make the pantry storage feel like it belongs in a dining room instead of a kitchen, I set the upper section back a few inches and added a matching wood top over the base cabinets. By putting the mullion doors only in the top section, you get the effect without limiting storage options in the main cabinet. The end result is beautiful built-in looking cabinets that still have tons of storage space.”—Anne Dempsey, designer; DDK Kitchen Design Group.
