Clients asked for a naturalistic view to screen a busy four-lane road fronting their garden; they did not want to be boxed in by an evergreen hedge. Utility wires restricted allowable plants in much of the area. We combined native grasses and wildflowers with native shrubs to screen the road and create four-season interest. Although most of the planting is deciduous, the grasses screen in the winter, while the shrubs do so after the grasses are cut back in early spring.
