Deer Run House

The house is composed of two wings with steeply pitched standing seam titanium zinc roofs that weather to a warm, silver gray, and a cladding of smooth hard-burned Manganese Ironspot bricks whose animated color turns the exterior wall into an effervescent surface. Symmetrical floor-to-ceiling windows line three facades of the main wing, allowing the forest views to be the main focus of each space and providing ample direct and indirect natural light that dilates the interior. The strong vertical lines of the façade merge with the surrounding rhythm of tall trunks. From the simplicity of the uniform cathedral ceiling and the white walls to the few pieces of furniture and artwork, the interior is designed to frame the landscape.

The south wing houses the garage on the main level and a meditation room and large office on the upper level. Across a one-story foyer that acts as a connecting and entry space lies the north wing, which contains the living and sleeping quarters. The main floor includes one large space to the east dedicated to living, dining, and cooking, which is screened with a soapstone divider. The master suite is located on the west end of this level, thus avoiding harsh early morning sun in favor of soft daylight. A private courtyard off the master bedroom gives access to an in-ground hot tub.

A consistent, refined palette of materials used throughout the interior of the house not only pulls the design together and gives the whole a tactile quality, but also suggests an attention to detail and a passion for craft that merge design and implementation. Floors are black-stained rift-cut oak on the main level. The other levels are carpet or polished concrete. Fireplaces, countertops, and bathrooms are made of soapstone slabs. Cabinets are stained rift-cut oak.
