Designed for Special Needs, Delray Beach FL

This 1500 square foot upscale addition was designed and built for a special needs child. The addition includes bedroom, bath, workspace and medias areas for the child as well as a laundry area, nanny's bedroom and bathroom. Specialty equipment included automatic door openers, ceiling lift, adjustable height changing table, security cameras throughout.

The Plan

This 1500 sq ft addition was designed and built specifically for a special needs child. It includes two entrances, a covered porch and a porte cochere that connects to the addition as entry protection from the heavy Florida rains.

Exterior Entrance

A view into the entrance hallway of the addition from the adjoining exercise room of the existing home. The door headers were designed to allow the ceiling smooth passage from room to room.

Custom Door Headers

The bedroom area includes a Pressalit adjustable height changing table with an adjacent storage closet to hold supplies. The ceiling lift runs throughout the entry, bedroom and bathroom areas and into an adjoining room of the main house used as an exercise room for the child.

Specialty Equipment

Custom roll under vanity with accessible sink and sensor faucet. The bottom panel hides the plumbing and can be removed when needed. The sensor faucet requires an electric outlet which sits behind the skirt. The Kohler sink is ADA rated.

Custom Closets

To maximize doorway clearance, pocket doors are preferred when the focus is on accessibility. Due to the cut out door header, designed to allow the ceiling lift to pass through the doorway smoothly, split pocket door were used

Each entrance was designed as zero step for ease of wheelchair entry.

The entry hallway includes automatic french doors and storage on both sides of the hallway. Built ins on one side to hold books and display items, while the closet on the other side organizes varied pieces of equipment used by and for the child
