Designing for Tall Windows

A very tall set of windows in my client's living room show off a beautiful view. Although privacy is not a concern, the windows need softening and she really wanted to add some color to the room. Decorative side panels are the perfect way to do this. They will frame the view and bring in color and texture.

The fresh green paint color on this Serena & Lily catalog was the inspiration for this project. My Encinita client wanted to translate this color into beautiful, tall side panels to frame the large window and view in her living room.

The living room is beautiful, with 18 foot ceilings and large windows but the cozy room feels a little naked without draperies to soften them.

The final fabric selections include a solid silk, an exact match to the magazine cover, as well as this unique chevron stripe. The ball fringe was just the right touch of texture and perfect with both fabrics.

Tall windows often need a drapery treatment that give your eye a break so they don't feel like they are towering over the room. A contrast banding is an excellent way to create that break. It can be added at the top or bottom, or anywhere in between, but you must be mindful of balance and...

To top it off, we selected acrylic finials on brushed gold drapery hardware. The acrylic adds a contemporary touch while the gold adds some warmth and ties in in with art work frames in the room.

Last but not least, we pulled a few extra fabrics in for pillows to tie the side panels in with the seating area on the right.

Typically this style of banding is only 12 - 24" but in this case, we wanted it to feel proportional so we went with a 48" band. It really shows off that beautiful chevron stripe!

A variety of fabrics and trims make the custom pillows lively and interesting and bring life to the sofa while coordinating nicely with the draperies.

This close up of the deep banding at the bottom of the drapes shows how important details are. The bobble trim creates a nice transition between the two fabrics.
